"What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah." -Psalms 89:48 KJV.
Death is the great reality. Every soul has an appointment with death that will be kept. "...and none can keep alive his own soul." - Psalms 22:29b KJV. No man is immune from the threat and reality of death. No man can keep his own soul alive, nor deliver his own soul from the hand of the grave. And so man fears his own death. Many souls are trapped in fear. The fear of death...the fear of loss, the fear of sickness, the fear of spirits, the fear of the dark, the fear of not living, the fear of the unknown, the fear of man...But the Lord Jesus says in Matthew 10:28 KJV - "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." The Lord Jesus says clearly to FEAR GOD. Our fears are misplaced, we fear this, we fear that, when we ought to fear God and depart from evil. God alone has the power to destroy both the body and soul in hell. This is a solemn warning from the Lord Jesus Himself. No man can keep the soul alive, and no man can kill the soul. The soul is in the hand of the living God. Every breath a living soul takes, every beat of the heart, the very soul of every man and woman, boy and girl, is in the hands of God. No man will cheat death.
Then there are those who say they have no fear. They proclaim they have no fear of death. Bring it on, they taunt. With hardened hearts, they have no fear of God. They proudly boast "I am the Captain of my own soul, the Master of my own destiny!" They do what is right in their own eyes, acting as their own god. Romans 3:18 KJV says- "There is no fear of God before their eyes." Such is the state of all of us before being saved. But many remain in this rebellious, unrepentant state before God. Some LOVE the darkness, hating the LIGHT...but they ought to FEAR GOD. Death is a great reality, and no man can keep alive his own soul. No man can deliver his soul from the hand of the grave. No man can save himself! There is a darkness to be feared greatly. When death comes, and the hand of the grave comes for the souls of the unsaved, and the fires of hell begin to engulf them, then they will surely fear Him who is able to cast both body and soul into hell. Accounts of horrid screams and cries on deathbeds of the unsaved at the moment of departure testify to this fact. They sense the flames in their last moments. When at last their foot is indeed slipping into the depths of hell, they will know that the LORD alone delivers souls from the grave, and from hell, but alas...it will be too late! They REJECTED the LORD. Others go along in life as if there is no God, yet having no fear of God before their eyes. They are enamoured with the things of man, and of the world, and the beguilements of the devil. Suddenly, death is upon them and their souls unprepared. They NEGLECTED the Lord. STOP trifling with your souls...NOW is the day of salvation. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
David said..."For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?" - Psalms 56:13 KJV. Man is NOT the master of his own destiny, nor the captain of his own soul...Only God keeps the soul alive, only God delivers the soul from death, from the hand of the grave. Only the LORD can save a man that he may walk before God in the light of the living. In His great mercy, God sent His only begotten Son, Christ Jesus the Lord, to save sinful man from death and hell. Christ died for our sins on the cross, was buried in a grave, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. The Lord Jesus, God manifest in the flesh, conquered death and the grave once and for all!
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." - Hebrews 2:14-15 KJV.
Man is subject to death, to the grave, to the fear of death...but the Lord Jesus triumphed over death, triumphed over the grave, and triumphed over he, the devil, who had the power of death! Note it says the devil HAD the power of death. The Lord Jesus HAS the keys to death and hell. The captives can now be free through the power of the Lord Jesus Christ! Our souls were doomed to die, to go to the grave, to be judged and face the wrath of God, to go to the fires of hell, and the eternal lake of fire. Our sin barring us from God's heaven for all of eternity. But, there is the SAVIOUR! Death is a great reality for certain, but an even greater reality is that we can have the SAVIOUR. Come to Him that you may live, that you may walk before God in the light in the living. Come to Him in repentance and faith, and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. Through Him and Him alone, God shall deliver thy soul from the hand of the grave.
Our works are useless and our religion is vain. Salvation is of the LORD.
By His grace, through faith alone, it is a gift of God, not of works.
This could be a souls final warning. No man knows his appointed time of death. No man knows when the Lord Jesus may swiftly return. "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" - Hebrews 2:3 KJV. How shall we escape what? How shall we escape the hand of the grave? How shall we escape the consequences and judgment of our sins? How shall we escape the wrath of God? How shall we escape the fires of hell and damnation? Do not neglect so great a salvation! This is a solemn warning to those who refuse to come to the Lord Jesus, to repent and believe on the One whom God hath sent. For the unsaved their souls are in great danger of falling into the hand of the grave, into the hands of the living God, who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. But for those of us who are saved by Him, we also know that God alone has the power to SAVE both the body and soul that we may walk before Him in the light of the living. We have not delivered our own souls, and we do not preach thus. We do not preach ourselves, but the Gospel of Christ Jesus the LORD and SAVIOUR.
Death is the great reality.
Only Christ Jesus the Lord can deliver the soul from the hand of the grave.
